The VAMC in Lexington, Kentucky is recruiting for an Assistant Chief for the Dental service to serve as a full-time medical service physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Dental, for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.
Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to:
Employee serves as staff dentist and is required to examine, diagnose, and treat patients under the supervision of the Chief, Dental Service. Completes any additional duties as assigned by Chief of Dental Service.
Shows courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude for patients, co-workers, and the public. Provides assistance to customers with questions or concerns
Perform oral screening exams
Examine emergency patients when indicated and respond to urgency of need
Complete required number of cases per month as designated by the Chief of Dental Service
Handles instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently
Provide comprehensive care to inpatients and outpatients within standard of care
Be clinically competent in all phases of general dentistry including restorative, fixed and removable prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery
Accomplishes all procedures within standard infection control protocols
Be proficient in hospital dentistry including inpatient consults and seeing patients in the operating room to perform general dentistry if indicated
Be certified in minimal oral surgery (oral and nitrous) and moderate (Intravenous) sedation
Provides patient education appropriate to the veteran's needs and oral condition
Provides individual and group oral health care instructions to inpatients, outpatients, and caregivers
Reads dental digital x-rays and determines appropriate diagnosis and treatment
Charts findings, treatment plans and treatment provided in patient electronic record
Evaluate employee performance as immediate supervisor
Answers dental consults, orders medications and completes all records in timely manner according to hospital policy
Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA with written and verbal information
Follow computer security regulations
Modifies care as appropriate for patient's age and abilities (patient transfer and position)
Provides accurate and understandable instructions to patients
Participates in patient identification and time out per JCAHO requirements
Monitors patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress
Work Schedule: 7:30am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Dentist Basic Requirements
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
