Duties

The CDC utilizes Direct/Expedited Hire Authorities to fill vacancies in a variety of occupations. This vacancy is a REPOSITORY of applications. Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to the grade level of the position. Applications may be periodically referred to hiring managers both during the open period and after the closing date. Because of the large number of applications anticipated, applicants' status will not be updated. This public notice will be used to fill the positions listed below at multiple grade levels and locations. Health Physicist: Grades GS-11 through GS-15 Applicant Expiration: Applications will expire 4 months after submission/resubmission. To remain eligible for consideration, reapplying is required. Duties may include but are not limited to: Providing comprehensive radiation exposure analysis to a large, identified, and targeted population of exposed workers Conducting technical evaluations to assess the measured radiation exposure for individual and groups of nuclear workers Researching and developing innovative radiation dose reconstruction techniques Providing advice and assistance on radiation exposure assessment and radiation safety issues to a variety of audiences Providing guidance and mentoring for lower-level health physics staff (junior or entry level health physicist) Providing written and oral reports on radiation exposures and findings on investigations of exposure analysis

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus OR Combination of education & experience: courses as above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience & other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above In addition to Basic Qualifications above, Minimum Qualifications must be met: GS-11: At least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience performing personnel dosimetry investigations and evaluations to determine personnel exposure, identify program trends or discrepancies, and recommend control measure changes OR A combination of education & experience GS-12: At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and disseminating data to assess radiation dose reconstruction. GS-13: At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience planning and overseeing radiation dose reconstruction projects, such as researching and developing innovative radiation dose reconstruction techniques for accomplishing tasks for which there is no precedent. GS-14: At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience in health physics and radiation protection; and managing or providing technical assistance to State, Tribal, Local, and/or Territorial preparedness and response efforts to nuclear or radiological incidents. GS-15: At least 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience in the reconstruction of occupational internal and external radiation doses at nuclear weapons research and production facilities, including the application of internationally accepted models and guidance to these doses, and the estimation of associated uncertainty. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
