The Veterinary Medicine Section (VMS) located within the Comparative Medicine Branch (CMB) is seeking to fill a Biologist (Animal) position at Research Triangle Park (RTP) in Durham, NC. If you are a highly motivated individual with with strong skills and experience in conducting in vivo animal experiments, particularly focusing on rodent surgeries, rodent imaging, animal health management, and research support across multiple laboratories, come join this amazing team!
Duties
Execute related surgical tasks, including pre-operative health assessments, safe and effective anesthesia/analgesia administration, intra-operative vitals monitoring, and ensuring successful anesthetic recovery.
Provide surgical support by performing tasks such as sterilization of surgical instruments, stocking and sanitization of surgical and imaging areas/supplies, and associated equipment maintenance.
Perform and train lab personnel on basic animal procedures, such as oral gavage, IP injections, tail vein injections/bleeds, and retroorbital bleeds.
Compile, analyze, and report data in collaboration with the research team.
Work with staff to set up and maintain diagnostic laboratory equipment ensuring instrumentation and equipment to be used are in working order and properly calibrated.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position, you must have:
A. completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR
B. Have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.
In addition, in order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-0401 position at the GS-11 level, you must have:
A. 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
B. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: 1. perform routine skills such as basic rodent handling, rodent injection techniques (SQ, IP, IV, RO), rodent blood collection (facial, IV), and other techniques including, but not limited to oral gavage; 2. perform rodent surgical techniques including animal preparation, anesthetic induction/monitoring, surgical procedures, postoperative recovery, and postoperative assessment as needed; 3. use rodent imaging equipment (e.g., Ultrasound, Body Composition, DEXA) used in preclinical imaging studies and clinical cases; 4. collaborate with lab members on the design, execution, and data analysis of in vivo experiments requiring technical, surgical, and/or imaging assistance; 5. generate and present scientific posters regarding research findings and clinical case reports at scientific forums.

C. have a combination of graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
