Duties

This position is located under the Office of Science and Technology inBeltsville, Maryland. This position serves as Deputy Chief of a Forensic Science Laboratory within the Office of Science and Technology at one of Laboratory Services Forensic Laboratories. The incumbent assists the Laboratory Chief by providing supervision to a staff of Section Chiefs, professional examiners and support personnel. The forensic staff performs chemical and physical analyses on evidentiary material connected with criminal investigations. This work includes identification and analysis of fire debris and explosives, firearm and tool mark examination, trace evidence analysis, fingerprint examination, DNA analysis, crime scene assistance, and other support activities critical to ATF's mission. Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: You must submit transcripts to verify that you meet the basic education requirement. You must show you have successfully completed a bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics OR A combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic qualifications listed above, to qualify for GS-15, candidates must also have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-14. Additional Conditions of Employment: GS-15 - You qualify if you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal, State, or Local government or equivalent public or private sector experience, performing the following duties. Specialized experience includes all of the following: Establish internal controls to ensure responsible use of funds and resources. Devise methods for completing projects and resolve conflicts that arise. Develop major aspects of key scientific program operations of a highly scientific and/or technical nature. Manage work of multiple scientific and/or technical groups through subordinate supervisors. Establish and implement a safety program to address unique challenges encountered in a laboratory where potentially hazardous conditions exist.
