About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Perform librarian duties in the area of public services (e.g. virtual or place-based services, information literacy or instruction, cadet services, archives and special collections, exhibits, user experience, or related areas). Work with faculty to design and promote information literacy initiatives within the curriculum. Identify trends in faculty and cadet use of library services and resources in order to design and deliver instruction and support. Provide support to cadets and faculty through library public service points. Recommend selection of materials, including monographs, journals and other digital or multimedia materials. Review approval plan notices, faculty requests, scholarly journals, bibliographies, advertisements, publishers and dealer catalogs to keep abreast of current and retrospective resources in the subject area. Assess quality and physical condition of the subject collections, making decisions on the replacement, transfer, withdrawal, or preservation of individual titles. Investigate and assess databases and other electronic products available from publishers in assigned subject areas and recommend purchase or license as appropriate. Assist in developing collection development and library academic support policies for assigned subject areas in consultation with faculty and collection development staff. Identify new technologies and resources available to meet the needs of patrons. Collaborate with other library staff to determine the feasibility of adopting identified process improvements.

  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

To qualify, applicants must meet one of the basic requirements listed below. a. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. -OR- b. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience, which includes: 1) Providing general library and/or information services to end users; 2) Organizing library materials; AND 3) Assisting with implementing information literacy training and/or programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). -OR- Education: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
