About the Position: Join us at the United States Southern Command. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations. Our contribution to furthering our country's relationships with South and Central American nations and peoples are substantial.
Duties
Align releases within the Commander’s Communication Strategy working closely with public affairs and SOUTHCOM Media Officer.
Ensure all material are coordinated with staff subject matter experts prior to release.
Prepare major strategic-level informational products for use in public and internal information.
Serve as Public Affairs Specialist for Media Relations and Digital Communications Division for USSOUTHCOM.
Educate US publics on SOUTHCOM’s operations, activities, and investments.
Develop strategies for effectively responding to public and media interest in controversial issues to avoid erroneous and sensational reporting.
Prepare senior level messaging from the Chief, SOUTHCOM to the SOUTHCOM Command Group.
Write information materials on command communications for internal and external publications.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Developing information of mass communication for social media releases. 2) Writing command publications to communicate effectively with the public. 3) Distributing informational products both national and international. 4) Maintaining effective relations with external media and internal sources of information. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
