About the Position: This is a vacancy for an Engineering Equipment Operator, WG-5716-11, Illinois Waterway Project, Maintenance Section, located in Peoria, Illinois.

Duties

Engaged in construction and maintenance of shore protection and channel control work on the Illinois Waterway. Operate crawler-type equipment with wheeled or crawler-type traction; including material handlers, bulldozers, motor grades, tractors, pavement rollers, etc. Utilizes equipment to push and grade or load and relocate earth, riprap, gravel, or other materials; clear brush and stubble or tree stumps; cut weeds and grass; etc. Operates and/or maintains and repairs marine and engineering equipment. Perform work involving a variety of general maintenance and repair tasks on lock and dam equipment and machinery and on buildings, grounds, and structures located at lock and dam sites.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
  • Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements. This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • The position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state issued motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Position requires a current Class B Commercial Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within one year from hire date and to be able to successfully test for renewal if required.
  • Required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.

Considerable strain is encountered resulting from vibration, jerking, jolting, etc., in operation over rough surfaces, Because of location of controls, may be required to work in awkward or strained positions. Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands and feet, and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment. Working Conditions: Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather, usually in an open driver's seat or partially protected cab, on a variety of terrain and soil conditions of types mentioned above. Employee is exposed to the possibility of equipment overturning and subject to normal power and hand equipment operational noise, dust, vibrations, fumes, or other injuries. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of tools, and to strains from infrequent lifting or swinging of somewhat heavy items. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other equipment as required. Standard hazard of drowning during floating plant operation is encountered.
