About the Position: Works under the supervision of Director, Historical Studies Directorate. Supervises historians assigned to research and write the Army's official histories and special studies.
Duties
Serves as direct supervisor for a staff of military and civilian historians.
Sets work priorities and schedules for completing historical projects.
Provides guidance to personnel on immediate and long-range plans and gives assistance on major problem areas.
Hears and resolves complaints from employees in the office.
Supervises the provision of research support and development of historical products for the Army, Department of Defense agencies, Congress, the White House, and a variety of governmental agencies.
Coordinates the work of multiple historians when projects require a team effort.
Reviews drafts of finished works, amending or suggesting revisions in organization, presentation, and written expression.
May divide work into discrete segments for division among subordinates and assimilates research results and written contributions into a coherent whole as the coordinating author of the final product.
Revises products as necessary to better organize the material, to select language that will present the historical material clearly and concisely, and to maintain proper balance and perspective without distortion of the facts.
Serves as a recognized authority and advisor on matters relating to military history.
Represents the Department of the Army, the Department of Defense, and the Center of Military History at conferences of professional historical societies and related associations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.

Basic Requirement for Historian:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing historical programs such as Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) Program; developing division annual budget; monitoring changes in historical field collection in applicable regulations and training manuals; and developing training for history detachments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).
