The primary purpose is to provide support to the installation occupational & environmental health surveillance programs. This position develops, plans, manages, & executes health risk assessment programs, samples, documentation & training in concert with the Department of Defense (DoD), Air Force Medical Service (AFMS), & Major Command (MAJCOM) strategic goals & objectives.

Duties

Conducts various duties to assess processes and environmental conditions for occupational health hazards. Special Surveillance. Oversees and executes BE Flight Ionizing Radiation and Non-Ionizing Radiation Programs. Manage Bioenvironmental Engineering technical program(s) in support of the industrial hygiene mission to include new and emerging technology. Serves as Customer Service Liaison to assigned units. Keeps informed on the latest DOD, USAF, OSHA, ACGIH, ANSI, NEC, NFP A, NRC, and EPA regulations or standards and advances in industrial hygiene and public health by reading professional literature, attending training and classes.

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Employee is required to obtain HazMat Operations certification.
  • Employee may be required to work uncommon tour of duty to support reserve requirements and/or emergency response.
  • Employee must meet physical standards according to AFI 48-123 and NFPA I 582, Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program/or Fire Departments.
  • Employee is required to wear respiratory protection, and meet the physical requirements to wear an SCBA and level A Hazard Materials Response suit.
  • No record of acrophobia or claustrophobia.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license to operate government motor vehicles in accordance with Air Force Instruction 24-301, Vehicle Operations.
  • Normal color vision and depth perception as defined in Air Force Instruction 48-123, Medical Examinations and Standards.
  • Maintain local network access IAW AFMANs 33-152, User Responsibilities and Guidance for Information Systems and 33-282, Computer Security.
  • Ability to wear a 40-pound air pack while carrying 40 pounds of equipment in a totally encapsulating chemical protective suit.
  • Medically qualified in accordance with Air Force Instruction 48-137, Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

Qualifications

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED: Incumbent must be medically fit for duty (FFD) as determined by a credentialed military healthcare provider upon completing an initial pre-placement FFD/medical surveillance (i.e. occupational health) exam and subsequent periodic FFD/medical surveillance exams. Specific exam requirements and frequency of examination will be determined by the installation Occupational and Environmental Health Working Group and communicated to AFRC Civilian Personnel Offices per AFI 10- 2501, Air Force Emergency Management Program and AFI 48-145, Occupational and Environmental Health Program. This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety. In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Environmental Health Technician Series 0698 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR CURRENT/PREVIOUS FEDERAL EMPLOYEES: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-09, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes Knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of bioenvironmental engineering, as well as knowledge of the mission, organizational structure, programs, and activities related to DoD, Air Force, and Air Force Aerospace Medicine (AMDS) occupational environmental health surveillance programs and policies. Knowledge of general management functions, practices, and procedures sufficient to understand organizational objectives, in-depth industrial hygiene principles, regulations, standards, and work processes of assigned organizational segment requirements, methods, and techniques for evaluating low to high-risk work areas as they relate to occupational health and safety. Knowledge of industrial hygiene and environmental methods, practices, techniques, materials, and sampling equipment to determine compliance with regulations and standards. (NOTE: This same experience must be well-described in the application/resume that you complete and submit in addition to answering this questionnaire.) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR APPLICANT WITH NO PREVIOUS FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-10, or equivalent in other pay systems. Knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices of bioenvironmental engineering, as well as knowledge of the mission, organizational structure, programs, and activities related to DoD, Air Force, and Air Force Aerospace Medicine (AMDS) occupational and environmental health surveillance programs and policies. 3. Skilled in use of computers, word processors, and software programs used to create letters, reports, spreadsheets, databases, and graphs. 4. Knowledge of industrial hygiene and environmental methods, practices, techniques, materials, and sampling equipment to determine compliance with regulations and standards. 5. Knowledge of training techniques, methods and material sufficient to develop and present formal training and instructional sessions to allied professions, employee, supervisors, and managers on industrial hygiene related matters. 6. Ability to communicate orally and in writing, prepare correspondence, briefings, and recurring and special reports regarding IH and Public Health related matters. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
