The primary purpose of this position is to troubleshoot, repair, modify, maintain, and to make final adjustments as required on T-1 and T-6 aircraft engines while on the aircraft, off airframe, or in test cells.

Duties

Troubleshoots, repairs, removes, and installs T-1 or T-6 aircraft engines, their assemblies, and components on the flight line Troubleshoots, disassembles, repairs, and reassembles aircraft engines, their assemblies, and components in maintenance shops or test cells Performs troubleshooting on, disassembles, repairs and reassembles a variety of major aircraft systems, their assemblies, and components. Performs aircraft scheduled and unscheduled/system inspections (e.g., Phase 1-4, ISO, Major, Minor, hourly post flight (HPO), Preflight, Thru Flight, Basic Post Flight, Time Compliance Technical Order Performs flightline and ground handling operations. Utilizes safety practices and procedures and controls tools. Accomplishes operational and maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair. Establishes and maintans good working relationships

  • Must pass flightline vehicle operations test
  • May be required to pass test on operation of 20-ton crash/rescue crane
  • May be required to hold or pass certification for flight control and canopy rigging
  • May be required to obtain and maintain aircraft engine run-up and test cell certification
  • Performs Foreign Object (FO) inspections and FO walks in accordance with established procedures
  • Must pass aircraft towing procedures test
  • Must acquire and maintain Red X inspection certification
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours, rotating shifts, uncommon tours of duty, emergency call back, weekends, holidays, overtime, etc.
  • May be required to travel TDY as directed by management, sometimes on short notice, traveling by military or commercial aircraft, or any other designated means
  • May be required to participate in contingency situations real world or exercise, as directed
  • Cannot be color blind to colors used for runway operations (red, green, and white)
  • Performs all other related duties as directed

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8602-10 Aircraft Engine Mechanic position. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of an Aircraft Engine Mechanic without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of installation, operation, and repair of a variety of conventional and modified aircraft engines and accessory systems preferably associated with T-1 or T-6 aircraft to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and/or test different types of engines; identify and correctly choose between alternative methods and trade techniques; adapt accepted repair procedures to new or unfamiliar engines or accessory systems; anticipate required tools and parts; set up the work area; determine degree of disassembly necessary, in proper sequence; and the extent of rework required. Knowledge of aircraft ground functional test procedures including engine run-up test and monitoring. Knowledge of the T-1 or T-6 aircraft makeup, operation, installation, and adjustment of a variety of major interrelated and/or integrated aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies such as fuel and hydraulic systems, flight control systems, instrumentation systems, engines, landing gear assemblies, airframe, and control surfaces Knowledge of Red X inspection procedures for assigned aircraft/engines and the ability to evaluate work, which has placed aircraft in Red X status Aircraft ground handling knowledge to include proper-lower radio operations and procedures; towing characteristics of assigned aircraft including landing gear, safety pins, wing locks, braking systems and tying down and grounding methods; proper aircraft jacking and leveling techniques; procedures for safety refueling and defueling aircraft and the ability to safely refuel and de-fuel aircraft Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations, tech orders and other guidelines. Ability to maintain and perform in a fast-paced high tempo environment under noisy and sometimes very warm conditions and to work and interact with others in a business-like manner PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy lifting (40 pounds). Moderate carrying (15-44 lbs). Hours of straight pulling are 1 hr/day. Hours of pulling hand over hand are 1 hr per day. One hour of pushing per day. Reaching above shoulder. Use of fingers. Both hands required. Five hours walking per day. Five hours standing per day. Three hours crawling per day. Three hours kneeling per day. Three hours repeated bending per day. Three hours of climbing, leg only per day. Climbing, use of arms and legs. Both legs required. Operation of hoists, hand trucks, lifts, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable to 13 inches to 26 inches to Jaeger 1 to 4. Specific vision requirement. Cannot be color blind to colors used for runway operations (R,W, D). Both eyes required. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of colors. Hearing aid permitted. Annual hearing test. If it cannot be otherwise accommodated, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases such as Hydrazine and Halon. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast. Working closely with others and alone. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
