The position is located in the Clinical Service - Laboratory Department at the Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Health Care Facility, Belcourt, North Dakota. Responsible for the application of analytical methods and procedures in the performance of standardized tests/examinations of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory. This position reports directly to the Laboratory Supervisor.

Duties

Performs a wide range of clinical laboratory tests/examination per requests by medical staff for use in clinical diagnosis, patient screening, and monitoring patient therapy. Withdraws appropriate quantities of blood by vein puncture and capillary puncture. Instructs patients and/or hospital personnel in the collection, preservation and transport of specimens. Sets up, operates and/or utilizes appropriate equipment, instruments, containers and other devices and materials to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of substances. Assures that such critical characteristics as temperature, humidity, volume, etc., are observed. Prepares solutions, stains, reagents and media required for the conduct of tests/examinations. Performs such tasks as labeling, cleaning and sterilizing equipment, glassware and instruments and writing reports on results. Interprets and evaluates results of tests/examinations in process and upon completion in order to recognize anticipated reactions and departures from the norm. Repeats test/examination if results provide improper or imprecise outcomes. Reports all recurring abnormalities and deviations to supervisor. Performs preventive maintenance, periodic inspection and performance testing of equipment and instruments together with the maintenance of appropriate records.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): OPM Link: Medical Technician Series 0645 (opm.gov) In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-3: Your resume must demonstrate at least six (6) months of general experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter of the position to be filled. Or, successfully completed a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients. Or, successfully completed 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological science. GS-4: Your resume must demonstrate at least six (6) months of general experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter of the position to be filled AND six (6) months of specialized experience obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Use laboratory manuals which give detailed instructions regarding techniques, procedures, reagents, controls, normal values, etc. Setting up collection trays with supplies necessary for collection of blood and other specimens. Or, successfully completed an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency. Or, successfully completed 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
