About the Position: This job announcement is for the position of Crane Operator Supervisor, WS-5725-12, located at the Mississippi River Project Office in Pleasant Valley, Iowa.

Duties

Plan weekly and monthly work schedules and sequence of operations for subordinates. Determine how many assignments can be done concurrently, which ones must be delayed, and the numbers and types of employees needed, considering skills, personnel, materials, and equipment available and required. Interview candidates for vacancies and recommend selection. Select workers and assign tasks to be performed; explain work requirements, methods, and procedures; and review work in progress or on completion. Adjust work plans, assignments, and methods, as necessary to accomplish work. Determine and/or coordinate equipment, supplies, and maintenance required relative to regular and /or special work projects. Develop performance standards, counsel employees on performance, make formal and informal performance appraisals, and counsel employees on problems and adjust informal complaints through discussions with employees and union representatives. Review job descriptions for currency and accuracy and make necessary changes, coordinating with appropriate organizational supervisory or staff support elements and report detailing of employees to jobs other than their own. Establish deadlines and priorities on the basis of a general work schedules and methods and policies established and/or approved by higher levels of supervision. Instruct subordinates in new procedures and provide advice when problems arise.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period may be required.
  • A medical examination is required. If selected, satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
  • Subsequent/annual physical are required.
  • Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements. This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • Must possess and/or obtain a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated and must maintain this license.

I can provide some leadership experience involving repair and maintenance or construction activities and can lead groups of workers to accomplish tasks on time. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: This position requires standing, stooping, bending, occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds, stretching, working in cramped positions and spaces, handling or maneuvering bulky equipment, and general continuous moderate to demanding physical effort. Working Conditions: Work crews are routinely assigned to remote locations not only within the duty location River Project, but also other area projects and potentially other Mississippi Valley Division (MVD) Districts. Work assignments are typically on an ongoing basis and are accomplished within several weeks to months. Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory. Incumbent will be exposed to all weather conditions.
