About the Position: Serves as a Crane Operator Supervisor for the US Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. Operates barge-mounted cranes required in the maintenance of navigation locks and dams and navigation channels, performing difficult operations where maneuverability is restricted and accuracy is critical. NOTE: This position is on the 1st shift: M-T 6:00am to 4:30 pm

Duties

As a Crane Operator Supervisor with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the incumbent is responsible for providing direct supervision in the performance of duties such as (but not limited to): Operating various cranes on Barges with various size buckets or loads and various length booms. Converting crane to a clamshell and excavating mud and sand from difficult areas. Using crane as dragline and handling rocks from barge to dikes, revetments and scour protection areas. Converting crane to pile driver and drives piling for mooring clusters, guide walls and wharves. Inspecting rigging prior to making assigned lifts. Performing preventative maintenance on equipment and machinery. Conducting Dewatering at lock and dams sites; works from confined areas setting bulkheads, dewatering pumps, culvert valves and culvert tracks.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Shift work is required (1st shift 6:00am-4:30pm)
  • Business travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Testing designated position (drug and alcohol).
  • Pre-employment and annual physical required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Crane Operator certification/qualification required at time of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a CRANE OPERATOR SUPERVISOR without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Crane Operator Supervisor activities. I can operate various types of cranes using assorted levers, pedals, and controls in handling heavy materials while working in tandem with other cranes; acknowledging the appropriate weight limits and angles to lift loads safely. I can perform the common duties as stated above. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Special Placement Factor: The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain certification/qualification by a professional, independent source that qualifies crane operators, qualification by U.S. military, or Licensing by a U.S. Government Entity. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle)Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)Operation of Motor VehiclesReliability and dependability as a Crane OperatorWork Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Effort: Exerts heavy effort in manipulating various levers, clutches, and brakes. Is subject to strain caused by crane vibrations and from jerking and jolting motions while lifting and moving loads. Occasionally moves objects such as hooks and cables weighing up to 50 pounds. Must make continual control changes to maneuver crane and load around obstructions and to position load or equipment at a precise location. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a partially enclosed crane cab during periods of extreme heat and cold. Incumbent is exposed to unpleasant noise, heat, and fumes produced by the crane engine and are exposed to possible injury caused by swinging loads, or from the crane overturning.
