About the Position: Serves as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic for the 596th U.S. Army Transportation Surface Brigade, Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point Office of the Commander located in Southport, North Carolina.
Duties
Perform repair work on equipment such as: forklifts, generators, large trucks, and hydraulic lifts.
Determine cause of malfunction in order to identify extent of repair(s).
Measure parts to ensure proper installation during repair, and/or maintenance.
Perform maintenance to equipment in accordance with manufacturer's operating manual and/or instruction manual.
Conduct inspections to diagnose trouble in engines and/or equipment.
Operate heavy duty mobile equipment to repair vehicles.
Use testing equipment to find hard-to-locate problems.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic tasks including repair work and preventive maintenance repairs on mobile equipment and vehicles. I can disassemble engines, transmissions, brake systems and tires. I can use hand tools of the trade. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. At times, works on top of or under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling and depressing of various hand and foot controls.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed inside and occasionally outside and subject to extreme weather conditions, in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work is dirty, greasy and noisy; possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, slipping tools, slipping from work position. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors and involves frequent exposure to exhaust fumes. Prescribed safety practices and safety equipment is used; protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
