The VANEOHS (Cleveland, Ohio) is seeking an established Pathology Specialist (Pathologist Assistant) to assist in coverage of a long-term absence NTE 120 days. The Pathology Specialist (Pathologist Assistant) will function in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service and will report directly to the Laboratory Manager.
This is a detail not to exceed 120 days. All per diem, salary, and travel costs will be paid for by the VANEOHS. Current supervisor authorization is required to be considered.
Duties
Preferred Experience Includes:
Performs all elements of gross examination and sectioning of every type of surgical pathology specimens, including complex resections.
Cuts specimens to preset optimal specimen detection for microscopic examination, pathologic diagnosis and cancer staging.
Performs autopsy evisceration: Removes and dissects visceral organs and/or brain to demonstrate the presence or absence of disease and/or atomic variation; prepares the body for pickup by a funeral home after autopsy.
Prepares frozen tissue sections and other tissue sections within or outside of the histology department.
Provides description of tissue received from surgery (includes noting size, color, consistency, and anatomic orientation).
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience performing all elements of gross examination, dictation, and sampling/sectioning all types of surgical specimens, noting size, color, consistency, and anatomic orientation, identifying abnormalities, and taking appropriate samples/sections according to published criteria for microscopic examination, pathologic diagnosis, and cancer staging.
Knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and cancer staging
Understanding of gross examination and sectioning procedures to adapt these procedures to the pathologic processes.
Experience performing a complete post-mortem examination as the primary eviscerator to include external examination; removal of visceral organs and brain in order to demonstrate the presence or absence of disease and/or anatomic variation.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/14/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Education: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work requires long period of standing while performing gross examinations and teaching others to do so, recurring bending over when performing frozen sections and autopsies, occasional lifting of heavy items (bodies), and above average dexterity in dissecting specimens and cutting frozen sections.
