This position is located within the U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory (USHRL) for the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, in Fort Pierce, FL
In this position, you will provide secretarial, clerical, and specialized office services assistance to the Laboratory Director for four research units.
Duties
Advises subordinate staff on the policies, procedures, and requirements of the supervisor.
Coordinates office activities with research unit program support assistants, research leaders and cooperators to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
Reviews all incoming directives, regulations, correspondence, and publications in the laboratory director’s office, determines those that can be acted upon personally, and takes necessary action.
Utilizes a variety of office automation software programs and equipment to edit, copyedit, type and format letters, memoranda, reports, manuscripts, research documents, charts, graphs, complex tabular material and tables, or forms.
Responds to requests for information from scientists, cooperators, industry, Congress and the general public in relation to the location’s functions.
Makes all necessary arrangements and obtains approval for domestic and foreign travel for the laboratory director, including arranging the schedule of the visits, making reservations, and notifying organizations and officials to be visited.
Researches, compiles, assembles information, and prepares special reports from materials submitted by other personnel and staff, maintaining the specific styles required by the director.
Requirements

Qualifications

GS-08
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience handling incoming and outgoing correspondence; scheduling and coordinating meetings and conferences; providing administrative support to leadership; and serving as a liaison between the office and external contacts.
Applicants must be able to type at least 40 words per minute

Physical Demands:
Work is primarily sedentary, but does require some walking, standing bending and carrying of light items. Substantial time is spent working with computer/word processor.
Work Environment:
The work environment is an air-conditioned/heated office setting and is typical of a professional office.
