Duties

Prepare frozen tissue sections for sectioning and stain slides during surgery. Responsible for receiving and accessioning tissue specimens, as well as proper processing, embedding, sectioning and staining of tissue samples and slides. Identify and recognize tissue samples from any part of the body. Select the appropriate tissue and staining procedures to be submitted for microscopic examination. Examine prepared slides to ensure the cutting and staining technique is adequate in displaying tissue cell structure prior to submission to the pathologist. Responsible for assisting department with shipping and receiving specimens for consult and reference testing. Responsible for filing and retrieval of blocks/slides. Responsible for accepting/releasing decedents into/from the morgue.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
• This is a mission essential position performing a Mission-Critical function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continue through full resumption of all functions.
• This position is Inclement Weather Essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
• Position may require the employee to work weekends and holidays including day, evening, or night shift hours.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated/documented work in staining, embedding of tissue specimens; microtomy of tissue; performing special stains; and preparing sample slides. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
