This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Under the direction of a Physical Therapist, the incumbent plans, develops, and administers a comprehensive Adaptive Reconditioning Program for Soldiers assigned to the Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU). The SRU is the unit for the Army's seriously wounded, ill and injured Soldiers.
Duties
The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) works under the general supervision of a Physical Therapist (PT) as required by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) supervision guidelines and standards of practice.
This position requires a PTA with an ability to treat a wide variety of conditions as the SRU population includes the most complex patient cases.
The caseload includes many Soldiers who do not present with typical physical therapy related diagnoses.
The PTA operationalizes the Adaptive Reconditioning Program established by the PT, developing specialized intervention techniques specific to the unique population within the SRU.
Utilizes experience and knowledge to assist Soldiers with specific needs (post-concussion, traumatic brain injury [TBI], poly-trauma, etc.) as needed for participation in the Adaptive Reconditioning Program.
Requirements

- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, or holidays.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work as an assistant to one of the specialized therapies such as Physical, Occupational, Orthopedic Outpatient, sports medicine, or experience gained as an assistant or aid in patient care where the duties involved actual participation in physical medicine and activities of a hospital or clinic. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Licensure/Certification: This position requires a current, active, valid and unrestricted license or certification as a Physical Therapy Assistant from a state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States.
