This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Richard Nixon Presidential Library. The incumbent performs a variety of duties, including oversight for all objects and official records, in connection with the management of the library's museum collections. The incumbent also carries out individual research and/or exhibit projects and performs a variety of public service duties.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-11. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As a Museum Specialist (History), you will:
Ensure that the proper procedures are followed with regard to the care, registration, and documentation of the collections.
Oversee the accessioning and cataloging of the collections and maintain manual and automated collections inventories and file systems. Develop and supervise all physical inventory projects for the Library and is responsible for developing progress and accountability reports for the collection.
Manage the proper conservation, preservation, and restoration of collections where assigned.
Develop and implement improvements in utilizing space, identify needs, and seek solutions for additional space and equipment. This includes ensuring the proper storage is maintained.
Supervise the movement of objects, especially those used in an active public performance environment. Coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments, especially loans for temporary exhibits, with the curator and other museum staff.
Respond to public inquiries concerning the collections, answering by letter, phone, electronically (e.g., E-mail), or in person. Furnish information on specialized subjects; extensive research may be required.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at the level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Conducting custodial duties related to artifact registration and collections-based management in a museum setting. Duties such as accessioning, proper care, accountability reporting, inventory, preservation, artifact handling, documentation of objects, and deaccessions; AND
Acting as Administrator of the museum collections management database such as: The Museum Software (TMS), PastPerfect Museum Software, Re:Discovery Software, or other museum specific collections database software; AND
Managing incoming and outgoing loans of artifacts in a museum setting including duties such as loan requests paperwork, insurance, shipping logistics, loans registration, and electronic (TMS) and hard copy records related to all loans.
For the GS-09, you must have one year of specialized experience at the level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Conducting custodial duties related to artifact registration and collections-based management in a museum setting. Duties such as accessioning, proper care, accountability reporting, inventory, preservation, artifact handling, documentation of objects, and deaccessions; AND
Inventory control consisting of records, reports and resolving inventory anomalies according to established SOPs and or procedures.
OR
EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 2 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position; (Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.)
OR
COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-11, you must have been at the GS-09level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07level for 52 weeks.
