Duties

As Deputy Fire Chief, participates in all aspects of the administration and planning of a comprehensive fire prevention, firefighting, and rescue program at the installation. Serves as the on-scene commander of a fire/crash scene until relieved by the Fire Chief. Assists the Fire Chief by representing the Fire Protection Flight at a variety of installation, local community, and functional area organizations and by participating in special projects and initiatives. Participates with the Fire Chief in the exercise of supervisory personnel management responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Must have and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • Certification Requirements: Fire Officer IV, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Airport Firefighter and HazMAT Incident Commander.
  • Position requires a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment and recurring physical examinations as required by DoD and DA standards.
  • This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
  • The inability to successfully pass; or refusal to conduct the test may result in the tentative or final job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process; or being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.
  • You may be required to sign a ‘Drug Test Statement of Understanding’ if you are selected for this position.
  • The position is designated as essential during inclement weather and increased TFPCON.
  • The incumbent must participate in the department's wellness program to include a physical exercise program and annual physical examination commensurate with incumbent's duties and responsibilities.
  • This position is designated as KEY IAW AR 690-11. A KEY position is subject to screening for Ready Reserve. Civilians must be exempt from recall to active duty because of Reserve and retired military obligations.
  • Incumbent works a 120 hour pay period.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to subsititute your education for the requried experince in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirment using experience alone -- no substitution of educstioan for experience is permitted.
