If selected you will perform a variety of survey, control, and regulatory activities which safeguards U.S. agriculture and natural resources against the entry, establishment, and spread of economically and environmentally significant pests.
Duties
The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Inspect orchards, fields, groves, storage sites, nurseries, rail yards, industrial sites, etc., to determine the presence of harmful insects, plants, and plants disease.
Collect insect specimens and soil samples and labels contents of specimens, showing location where found.
Remove and destroy host plants and diseased or infested plants.
Assist with the fumigation or treatment of equipment, plants or soils.
Mix insecticides, herbicides, etc., and apply to designated areas using hand or power-driven spray equipment.
Maintain, bait, install, and collect insect traps.
Clean and oil hand tools such as axes, saws, pruning shears; washes and greases hand and power spray equipment.
Collect and records data; prepare simple reports; develop rough maps showing control and eradication treatments.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Individuals who were born male after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

- Valid state driver's license is required at the time of application.
- Work involves the use of toxic chemicals, pesticides and fumigants.
- Protective clothing may be required such as hard hats, gloves, goggles, or masks.
- Must have the ability to operate various hand tools and spray equipment.
- Must have the ability to carry hand tools and pesticides weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Operate cars, pickups, and other motorized equipment required.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
FOR THE GS-03 LEVEL: Applicants must have six months of generalized experience that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position described in the vacancy announcement.
OR Successful completion of 1 year of study that included at least 4 semester hours in courses such as biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture, or physics.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-03 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
