This position is located in Colorado National Monument. Please visit find a park or additional park information. This position is open to Department of Interior (DOI) current permanent employees on a competitive appointment and employees that meet Land Management Authority.

Duties

This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. Selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status and can expect to work a minimum of 21 pay periods not to exceed a maximum of 25 pay periods. Selectee will be placed in a non-pay status from approximately July 28th to August 24th unless other work exists that can be assigned to you during this period. Though non-pay time may be reduced, Selectee will be placed in non-pay status for a minimum of 1 pay period in accordance with NPS policy. Additional work must be in concurrence with applicable regulations and policies. GS-07 grade level Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Serve as park archeologist assisting the cultural resource program manager for planning, programming, and executing the completion of cultural resource management tasks. Assist in planning special preservation, inventory, assessment, research, and/or other cultural resources management activities and projects. Participate, as a team member, in preparing resource management plans and environmental assessment documents that identify special cultural resource considerations, and/or potential impacts to cultural resources. Utilize GIS technology to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquiries form technical supervisors, managers, and others.

Qualifications

You must meet the BASIC Requirement *AND* meet the MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Requirement in order to qualify for this position. BASIC Requirement for the Archaeologist 0193 series: A. Education 1. Bachelor's or higher Degree that included three (3) semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; and 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; -AND- Six (6) semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; -AND- Archeological field school.(NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.) OR 2. Bachelor's or higher degree that included Related Curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A. (including archeological field school). NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then determine the your experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify this grade level. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education and your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.) OR C. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. *AND* MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying: Specialized Experience-GS-07: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) accomplishing small or simple restoration or mitigation actions, such as erosion control, revegetation, conservation of historic objects, archaeological reconnaissance, oral histories, etc.; (2) conducting investigations and identifying and catalogue resources; (3) maintaining and updating cultural resources databases; and (4) developing and maintaining liaisons and effective working relations with related groups, individuals, and agencies. OR Education GS-07: Successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate level education in an accredited college or university that included a major field of study or specific course requirements generally stated in the basic requirements. (NOTE: You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts). This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. OR Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) GS-07: Successful completion of a bachelor's degree with at least one of the following (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher based on a 4.0 scale; (2) a 3.5 GPA or higher for required courses completed in a major field of study during junior and senior year of a 4-year college or university; (3) class standing of upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or a major subdivision of the college, such as the College of Liberal Arts, based on completed courses; or (4) membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies. In order to be creditable under this provision, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position being filled. (NOTE: You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts with conferred date). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.) Specialized Experience-GS-09: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) providing archeological data for management decisions requiring archeological input, reconstruction, restoration and/or stabilization work on archeological sites and structures; (2) utilizing results of research to provide technical advice to managers regarding the full scope of cultural resources (3) using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to record archeological site and features; and (4) interacting and/or providing cultural resources information to various groups such as the management, land owners, state and tribal government officials, and the public. OR Education GS-09: Successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirements generally as stated in the basic requirements. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. (NOTE: You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts) OR Combination of Education and Experience GS-09: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Education

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-05 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. One year at the GS-07 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level.(Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted).

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
