This incumbent will perform a comprehensive and intensive review of the disability aspects of selected Title II and Title XVI claims and continuing disability reviews, including initial actions and those which have been reconsidered by the State agencies or in face-to-face disability hearings, and identifies trends and issues which impact the disability program.
Duties
Reviews the full range of case files including the most difficult and complex claims involving reconsideration of previous denials or cessations by the State agencies to evaluate region-wide application of disability policies and procedures.
Extracts a variety of information on State agency development techniques, disability evaluation procedures and other indicators of State agency performance.
Modifies, reverses or reaffirms State agency determinations in accordance with the provisions of titles II and XVI of the Social Security Act, as amended.
Reviews determinations in unusually complex and sensitive cases. These include reopening and revisions of prior determinations; cases with possible fraud issues; cases in which cessation of disability has been determined;
[CONT] cases with Congressional or similar involvement; cases involving policy precedent issues; and cases involving court orders.
Performs special studies of disability cases in specified problem areas where important questions of administrative policy, Federal/State relations, relations with the medical profession, and similar broad issues are involved.

Qualifications
To qualify for this GS-12 position, the applicant must have 52 weeks of specialized experience at, or equivalent to the Federal GS-11 level (or above), which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled, that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience must include ALL of the following:A) developing, examining, investigating, adjudicating, authorizing, or otherwise administering claims for medical disability programs;B) applying vocational policies regarding the ability to perform past and other work in making disability determinations; and C) making final medical and vocational disability determinations at the initial, reconsideration, or continuing disability review level.Examples of such experience may include but is not limited to:
providing medical disability training or managing/supervising a medical disability unit;
applying knowledge of medical disabilities, medical terms and findings, causes of diseases, treatment methods, and probable results of treatment in making determinations or adjudicating claims
analyzing the relation of physical impairments to ability in order to determine an individual's functional capacity.
developing and evaluating pertinent medical facts and evidence to apply and interpret state and federal laws, regulations, policies, precedents and other criteria for physical and mental impairment disability cases
