This position is a Motor Vehicle Operator, WG- 5703-8 working in Anderson, California, for the R8-Coleman National Fish Hatchery.

Duties

As a Motor Vehicle Operator your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs fish cultural work as related to caring for eggs, fry, and fish throughout the rearing and distribution cycle. Monitors appearance and activity of fish for obvious signs of disease, overcrowding, and adverse water conditions. Feeds fish using automatic and/or manual feeding methods and monitors feeding responses and suggests changes as needed to biologists. Cleans intake structures. Flushes, cleans, and sterilizes raceways, troughs, hatchery tanks and recirculation system components. Prepares and administers drugs and chemicals for fish disease, and water quality, under the control of a supervisor. Records daily feed amounts, mortality numbers, and water quality parameters. Maintains imperiled aquatic species. Operates gasoline and diesel vehicles, distribution trucks and tanks, cars, pickups, trucks, forklifts, or tractors, UTV's, and Cushman's, with gross vehicle weight of up to and including 40,000 pounds or more with a load capacity of 6 tons or more 10% of the time. The vehicles usually have two or more gear ranges capable of providing six or more forward speeds, have six or more driving wheels and are usually equipped with air brakes. Operator may drive over rough, unimproved roads and will need to determine manner and sequence of loading to achieve balance and protection for fragile items. A commercial driver's license will be required. Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on motor vehicles, distribution trucks, fish feeders, lawn mowers, water pumps, and utility trucks used in the operation of the hatchery. Preventive maintenance tasks may include the replacement of filters, changing oil, lubrication. Operates equipment such as low and high pressure sprayers, automatic fish feeders and a variety of power tools such as sanders, hand-held trimmers, and drills to accomplish tasks. Performs adjustments to the water supply system to regulate a variety of automatic or manually controlled equipment necessary for the production of fish to ensure maximum safety and health of the fish. Operates and maintains equipment such as gates, pumps, valves, filters, and sterilizers to regulate water quality and quantity. Assists higher graded employees in performing electrical work and involves making minor repairs that can be accomplished by removing and replacing defective wiring; and replacing burned out switches and fixtures. Performs ground maintenance duties including mowing lawns, weed eating, using blowers, trimming shrubs, planting trees, spraying, and other associated work. Assists higher graded employees in performing plumbing work involved in modification and repair of aquariums, hatchery tanks, and lines. Plumbing tasks may include the replacement and cleaning of faulty plumbing fixtures including leaky drains, dirty traps, and commodes as well as installation of water lines, pumps, and valves. Assists higher graded employees in painting buildings and fixtures, including surface preparation, priming, staining, and applications of final coat. Tasks are accomplished using brush, roller, or spray gun. Interior staining or painting may involve the application of fine, even, and decorative finish in a display area. Performs general carpentry work to repair and construct raceway screens, tables, shelves, and cabinets. Maintains accurate records on certain maintenance activities. Maintains work areas in a clean, orderly, and safe manner. Physical Effort: Prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending and climbing are required, as well as lifting and carrying. The incumbent must be physically active, agile and have endurance to withstand arduous conditions. Items weighing up to 50 pounds are lifted ( 50 pound bags of fish feed are lifted to a height of 4 feet). This position involves periods of sustained exertion during periods of spawning and fish handling and extreme exertion when participating in emergency operations (i.e cleaning and adjustment of water intake structures during high water and/or leaf drop). This position is primarily outdoor work, so the incumbent will be subject to extreme ranges in temperature and inclement weather. Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to extreme weather conditions. Drives in all types of traffic and weather, often over unimproved roads. Is subject to cuts and bruises while loading and unloading vehicles and caring for fish. Uses safety precautions and specialized gear such as hip waders, aprons, steel toed boots, gloves, goggles an other protective equipment. Exercises care in handling chemicals and pharmaceuticals

  • Other License: Duties of the position require the employee to have and maintain a valid State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in order to operate vehicles and equipment.
  • Uniform: Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform will be required.
  • Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Qualifications
