The primary purpose of this position, Fire Protection Specialist, GS-0081-09 is to serve as a Fire Protection Engineer Technician assisting in the planning, directing, and coordinating activities of the program including a comprehensive inspection of facilities to detect/eliminate fire hazards. Coordinate installation plans/specifications for new construction/renovations.
Duties
-Direct, review and coordinate on fire protection engineering and fire prevention requirements in coordination with Fire Protection Engineers (FPE).
-Determine the need for fire suppression systems, fire detection systems, and fire reporting systems for existing and new facilities in coordination with the assigned Professional Engineer (PE).
-Serve as a point of contact in providing fire protection guidance to Professional Engineers for Contracting, Army Corps of Engineers, Air Force Material Command (AFMC), National Guard Bureau, Air Force Reserve tenants, and AF and other base organizations.
-Provide technical advice to the Fire Chief regarding the effect of both immediate and long-range planning programs related to fire protection engineering.
-Perform duties as Incident Safety Officer (ISO), participate within the incident management system as a command staff member and response to emergency in accordance with SOP/SOG to emergency incidents.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0081, Fire Protection and Prevention Series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year, or will have one year within 120 days of closing of this announcement, at the next lower grade GS-08, or equivalent in other pay system. Specialized experience is described as (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-08 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. Due to the use of 120 day rosters, applicants within 120 days of completion of TIG requirements are encouraged to apply.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of fire protection engineering theory, philosophy, principles, practices.
2. Knowledge of fire protection building construction features and fire protection building codes.
3. Knowledge of fire suppression systems, fire detection, and reporting systems.
4. Ability to maintain good working relations; communicate orally and in writing; and lift and carry heavy loads.
5. Ability to develop lesson plans and to read complex construction drawings.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

*PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping,
stretching, reaching or similar activities while performing inspections or, training demonstrations. NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL.
*WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in various settings, such as office buildings, warehouses, industrial buildings, or construction
sites. In some areas, the employee may be required to wear protective clothing, such as masks, goggles, gloves, selfcontained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or shields. The work may involve moderate risks requiring the exercise of safety precautions when working around fuel transfer operations, construction sites, hospitals, airfields, etc.
The incumbent of this position must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification system as Fire Inspector III (includes Fire Inspector I, II), Fire Instructor II (includes Fire Instructor I), and HAZMAT Awareness. NOTE: The following certifications are also required if the Assistant Chief for Fire Prevention is utilized to fill in for the Assistant Chief for Operations position - Fire Officer III, Hazmat Incident Commander (includes Hazmat
Awareness, Hazmat Operations and Hazmat Technician), Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I and II).
