Duties
The USAO-WDVA is seeking an Assistant United States Attorney in the Civil Division - Affirmative Civil Enforcement. This position is for an AUSA who will prosecute civil cases on behalf of the United States. The United States brings civil lawsuits against companies and individuals for violations of law, including violations of the False Claims Act, Controlled Substances Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Fair Housing Act, and others. The successful applicant will lead affirmative civil fraud investigations and prosecutions to assert and protect the interests of the United States. An appointment as an ACE AUSA offers a unique and challenging experience for a highly motivated attorney: the opportunity to handle their own caseload in which they investigate and prosecute a wide variety of federal offenses. The successful applicant will also represent the United States in a variety of defensive matters brought against the federal government and its agencies, including constitutional and statutory challenges to agency action, employment discrimination, medical malpractice, general torts, constitutional torts, immigration, prisoner, and commercial litigation. An AUSA engaged in this challenging work should expect to spend time developing cases with federal agents and investigators, researching and writing, filing complaints, conducting pretrial discovery, and litigating cases in court(dispositive motions and trials).
All initial attorney appointments in the Department of Justice are made on a time-limited(temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
Demonstrate superior oral and written communication skills, possess strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment, and demonstrate the capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment.
United States citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
A federal clerkship and/or experience litigating in federal court is preferred. Only applicants with strong academic records, superior legal research and writing skills, and sound judgment will be considered. Please note: the Department of Justice generally prohibits its attorneys from engaging in the compensated outside practice of law, with the exception of law professors. Attorneys in this category are employed to teach law and are not otherwise engaged in the compensated outside practice of law.
