About the Position: This position is in the Laboratory Department, Naval Health Clinic Quantico. The Medical Technician serves as a phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory and is responsible for specimen collection, receiving, and processing. The Phlebotomist will be responsible to obtain blood samples from patients of all ages and assist in preparation of patient specimens for shipment to reference laboratory. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Serve as a laboratory receptionist in greeting patients, answering phones, and providing excellent customer service. Explain the purpose and procedure for tests to the patient. Receive patient specimens of blood, urine, stool, sputum, tissue, and other body fluids. Process a variety of specific standardized tests in the areas of to include but not limited to: chemistry, microbiology and hematology. Perform blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques on patients. Perform clerical duties related to handling of laboratory results. Processes a wide variety of laboratory specimens for shipment. Performs preventive maintenance, periodic inspection and performance testing of equipment and instruments with the maintenance of appropriate records. Using problem solving skills identifies and corrects any problems arising with the received specimens. Maintains orderly and timely flow of specimens to the technical areas throughout tour of duty.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing patient records; drawing patient labs and labeling specimens according to policy and utilizing automated computer systems to check patients into laboratory and update patient data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as, Chemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, and Phlebotomy. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. Preferred: Phlebotomy Certification
