Duties

Serve as a journeyman Electrician for the Directorate of Public Works. Install, maintain and repair electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes, as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools and appliances. Follow maintenance schedules and inspections of work orders. Perform maintenance services and diagnose system or equipment malfunction and repairs. Inspect, maintain, repair, test and adjust electrical buzzers and bell circuits, light sockets, lighting fixtures, fans, switches, office and heating appliances, fire alarms, rheostats, thermostats and electrical drills, grinders and shop equipment. Test various equipment and systems by use of voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter, megger and ohmmeter, et Measure, cut, thread, bend, assemble and install conduits. Perform preventive maintenance on emergency generators. Prepare bill of materials and wiring layout sketches as required by supervisor to accomplish repair or upgrade of equipment and lighting.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Subject to emergency call backs and must carry a pager and/or a cell phone.
  • Occasionally required to perform duties at other than normal duty hours such as weekends, evenings, nights, and holidays.
  • Overtime will be required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of entrance on duty date based on course availability and government funding.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License (for operation of graders and front-end loaders) within 6 months of entrance on duty date based on course availability and government funding.
  • Must obtain and maintain forklift certification and license within 6 months of entrance on duty date based on course availability and government funding.
  • Must pass a pre-employment and annual physicals.
  • This is a Testing-Designated Position (TDP). the selectee must pass a pre-employment drug test and is subject to random alcohol and drug testing, and drug testing when there is reasonable suspicion of the use of illegal drugs.
  • Must possess a state issued electrical journeyman or greater license.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) ELECTRICIAN ~ without more than normal supervision. Perform common duties of an Electrician to include: wiring systems, disassembly and assembly work, install brackets, shelves and racks, remove and replace controls and fixtures; and repair wiring. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and where parts of the system worked on are in hard to reach places. Required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers or equipment. ???????Working Conditions: Work is done inside buildings and outside, where the incumbent is exposed to weather conditions. Work is usually dirty, dusty and greasy and occasionally noisy. Frequently exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shock and burns. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and clothing (e.g., safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.).
