The primary purpose of this position is to plan, lay out, fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and install sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies and to perform welding work in the manufacture, repair, modification, and assembly of various types of metal and alloy parts, equipment, systems, and structures.

Duties

- Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in the construction and maintenance of installation facilities - Develops patterns, cuts, forms, joins, assembles, and installs items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes. Examines, troubleshoots, installs, modifies, disassembles, repairs and maintains commercial vehicular, sectional, rolling, personnel, fire, security and special door systems. - Uses a variety of welding processes such as oxyacetylene, electrode arc, submerged arc, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, metal spray arc, and spot and stud welding to join all types of common metals and alloys - Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders. Sets up clamping fixtures. Utilizes safety practices and procedures, and complies with established safety rules and regulations. - Operates and maintains complex hand and power tools and equipment such as sliproll forming machines, box and pan brakes, rotary machines with extra forming rolls, and crimping, burring, turning, and beading machines, and soldering and welding equipment to fabricate and repair items

  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license may be required for the position.
  • The employee may be required to maintain current certification to perform various types of welding work. Welding proficiency is verified by destructive and nondestructive testing of welds.
  • May be required to train and/or guide lower grade employees
  • May be required to be certified for working with and/or removing hazardous materials
  • May be required to be certified in line and/or high-pressure steam lines
  • This position is designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force civilian drug-testing program.
  • As a mandatory requirement for employment in this TDP, the incumbent is to (a) refrain from the use of illegal drugs and (b) if required, submit to urinalysis testing.
  • The selectee must sign statements acknowledging the position is identified as a TDP

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4700 General Maintenance & Operations Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of sheet metal shop mathematics; a wide range of welding principles, processes, standards, and difficult techniques; and how various metal alloys react to different welding processes. 2. Knowledge of safety and environmental standards, regulations, and requirements. 3. Skill in formulating plans, patterns, and templates involving straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, pitch, and planes; planning, laying out, and pattern development (including geometric projection and triangulation) and construction to assemble, disassemble, manufacture, and repair sheet metal systems, components, and items; and fabricating complex items from a variety of materials such as galvanized or stainless steel, black iron, aluminum, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material, and alloys. 4. Skill in using and maintaining a variety of sheet metal and welding tools, equipment, and measuring instruments; and assembling, fabricating, and repairing sheet metal systems, components, and items. Knowledge of operating characteristics and mechanical and electrical procedures associated with commercial vehicular / personnel doors, powered and non-powered vehicular gates, vehicular final denial barriers and special door systems (e.g., hydraulic and pneumatic) and the equipment involved, and the applicable installation and repair procedures involved. 5. Ability to inspect and evaluate structural damage to sheet metal systems sufficient to plan and accomplish repairs; and weld dissimilar metals including parts and structures that vary in size, shape, and thickness. 6. Skill and ability to read and interpret technical manuals, shop directives, multi-view blueprints, sketches, diagrams, work orders, installation instructions, and other specifications to independently diagnose, plan, and complete work requirements. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items and in constructing larger and bulkier material. Requires physical effort which includes prolonged standing on production lines; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolds; stooping, kneeling, crawling, stretching, and working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items or when welding in hard-to-reach or confined spaces; and reaching lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and over 50 pounds with assistance. WORKING CONDITIONS: Employee works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather and in areas that are dirty, greasy, smoky, and subject to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines. Is exposed to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, ultraviolet radiation, and heated materials. There is the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, bruises, falls, broken bones, burns, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. There may be discomfort when wearing protective clothing, safety shoes, gloves, flash shield or eye goggles, and other equipment as required. Shop areas normally have adequate lighting and ventilation.
