Duties
Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a first level supervisor, providing planning, directing, organizing, and exercising control over nonsupervisory employees assigned to Squadron Officer School (SOS) while managing, maintaining and executing delivery of SOSs curriculum, overseeing instructor preparation and delivery, conducting relevant research, and teaching in Air University educational programs.
Duties
Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of Squadron Officer School Academic Affairs (SOS/DE), ensuring that officer professional military education (PME) and faculty development comply with legal and regulatory requirements and meets customer needs.
Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities.
When the Squadron Officer School (SOS) Dean is unavailable, represents SOS with a variety of installation and functional area organizations.
The Assistant Dean helps to coordinate development, administration, guidance, implementation, and oversight of new and existing academic programs and academic affairs for SOS.
Conducts and oversees individual and student research and teaches in support of relevant Air University programs as required and serves as lead for faculty development opportunities in support of Air University's and SOS's mission.

- This is a Supervisory Position. A one (1) year supervisory probationary period is required if applicant selected has not previously met this requirement.

- An earned terminal degree in desired field pertinent to the curriculum related to Educational Psychology, Adult Education, Educational Technology, or Educational Leadership is highly encouraged.
- Work experience in Professional Military Education and with company grade officers is also highly desired.
- Understanding of adult education and work experience in adult education is strongly desired.
- Work experience with contracts or supervising contracts is strongly desired.
- Weekend and evening duty is infrequent but possible.
- Because of the nature of the Air University education programs, incumbent may be required to teach across SOS curricula, to include lecture-hall, classroom teaching, guided discussions, and experiential learning sessions.
- Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-1701, General Education and Training Series.
BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have a Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position of a Supervisory Assistant Dean. NOTE: You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts.
OR
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: -- Courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. NOTE: You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-12, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes, (1) Knowledgeable of both academic and military cultures, understand the needs and requirements of DoD and the Air Force; (2) Knowledge of educational psychology, and adult education resources, methodologies, principles, practices, and techniques of educational instruction; (3) Using knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures; (4) Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions and staff of a small to medium sized organization; (5) Ability to establish program objectives and to assess progress toward achievement of those objectives; while working harmoniously with others within the education environment; (6) Ability to analyze problems and develop timely and economical solutions; (7) Skill in accomplishing special educational/instructional group research studies and projects.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-12 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-13 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of educational psychology, and adult education resources, methodologies, principles, practices, and techniques of educational instruction.
2. Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures.
3. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions and staff of a small to medium sized organization.
4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to include delivering, rich, and engaging lectures.
5. Ability to establish program objectives and to assess progress toward achievement of those objectives; while working harmoniously with others within the education environment.
6. Ability to analyze problems and develop timely and economical solutions.
7. Skill in accomplishing special educational/instructional group research studies and projects.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
