About the Position: You will be assigned to the MSU as shift operator with responsibility for operation and maintenance of all utility equipment on a self contained quarter boat.
NOTE: The duty location of this position will be wherever the Mat Sinking Unit is located.
NOTE: This a Permanent-Seasonal appointment, incumbent will be placed in a non-pay status when work is unavailable.
Duties
Operate and make frequent visual and auditory inspections of light plant, oil fired water heaters, ice producing plants, refrigerators for food storage, fire pumps, heating plant, and large kitchen ranges, as kitchen ranges.
Observe various pressure temperature, water level gauges, and electric meters reflect proper readings, and that lubricating systems are functioning properly.
Inspect pumps of water, lines and refrigerating system to detect need for repacking or repair.
Operate motors and pumps in pumping raw water to storage, and in pumping water through the water chlorination and filtering system and into storage tanks.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must pass pre-employment physical as well as an annual physical.
- Work in inclement weather conditions.
- Must pass pre-employment drug testing and periodically thereafter.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Ulility Systems Repairer/Operator without more than normal supervision. Duties include: Maintaining and operating utility equipment consisting of power plants, light plants, fire and water pumps, ice producing machines, heating systems, cooking equipment, refrigeration units, water chlorination and filtering systems, plumbing works, and sewage disposal systems. Other tasks my include checking and replenishing fuel, changing oil, filling oil and grease cups, and assisting in making major repairs to equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Demands: This position requires moderate physical effort in frequently bending, stooping and reaching, and occasionally using tiring positions while handling light hand tools, wrenches and lubricating equipment. These duties are not as physically demanding as general automotive repairing contemplated at the 4th Degree.
Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to dirt. and grease, noise. that cannot be talked above, uncomfortably hot temperature from motors below top deck of barges, fumes and odors. Works in close proximity to running motors and equipment.
