This position is located in Dental Service, Boise VA Medical Center, Boise, Idaho.
Assists the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision.
Duties
Distributes and balances the workload among staff in order to ensure timely processing and to ensure that each employee has enough work to keep busy.
Keeps in touch with the status and progress of work, and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
Monitors working conditions such as seating, ventilation, lighting, safety, etc.
Reports to supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees.
Spot checks work in progress and assists in reviewing completed work to see that instructions, work sequences, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met.
Amend or reject work not meeting established standards.
Refers to the supervisor questions or issues not covered by standards and/or problems in meeting performance standards.
Instructs employees on specific tasks/job techniques and make available written instructions and reference materials as necessary.
Shows courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude for patients, co-workers and the public.
Assists dentist in charting findings and treatment plans in patent records
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 0730-1600

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Be a Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Dental assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Experience and Education:
Experience. Six months experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. OR,
Education: Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). OR,
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying
Certification: Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes DANB as the national certification for Dental Assistants. DANB certification is required for this grade level (GS-7).
Grade Determinations for GS-7 Lead Dental Assistant:
Experience: At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level or equivalent that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Advanced knowledge of dental assisting across multiple areas of practice, and demonstrated ability to provide guidance to staff dental assistants.
Skill in coordinating clinical work flow and assignments.
Ability to assist in dental program development, outcome management, and strategic planning.
Skill in acting as liaison between staff dental assistants and the supervisor.
Ability to provide professional oversight and consultation for staff dental assistants.
Preferred Experience: Full understanding of Boise VA Medical Center Dental Service processes, leadership qualities, and experience in chair side assisting, both general dentistry and specialty dentistry.
