Duties
If selected for this position, you will serve as a Supervisory Legal Assistant for the El Paso branch of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas. Typical work assignments will include:
Distribute work assignments in the Unit with complete authority to direct employees on various work assignment changes due to vacancies, absences, or workload increases, and based on the difficulty and nature of the assignments involved.
Develop training plans for assigned employees, conduct on-the-job training, recommend formal training when needed, and provide for back-up skills by cross training.
Advise employees of the performance requirements of their positions, complete midyear progress review reports, and prepare the annual performance appraisal for each employee.
Recommend promotions, awards, disciplinary actions, and resolve grievances that can be resolved at the supervisory level. With assistance from the Office Manager, hold corrective interviews with employees as necessary to address performance or conduct issues.
Serve as the focal point in providing expert advice on legal support work. Perform most difficult and complex support. Provide technical advice to lower graded support staff regarding procedures and processing requirements of legal actions. Recommend and implement internal procedures relating to legal assistance functions.
Conduct a variety of legal assistance duties pertaining to legal actions, requests or matters.
Monitor the progress of pending cases. Prepare appropriate pleadings and follow up to ensure the responses are timely filed. Prepare all correspondence and reports of hearings. Select, assemble, summarize and compile all reference materials relating to assigned cases to complete processing.
In response to requests from attorneys, conduct factual and legal research in legal and non-legal databases and provide requested information.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
- If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
- Background investigation, credit check, and drug test required.
Qualifications
GS-09: To be eligible at the GS-09 level, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience serving as the focal point in providing expert legal advice on legal support work; performing the most difficult and complex support; providing technical advice to lower graded support staff regarding procedures and processing requirements of legal actions; recommending and implementing internal procedures relating to legal assistance functions; examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents; providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation; conducting legal research at the direction of attorneys; composing original letters that require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology; establishing and maintaining files, producing a variety of written documents using a wide range of office software applications.
To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
