About the Position: This position is a Librarian (Reference Services) for the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC). The DLIFLC is the world's largest Foreign Language Institute. This position is located at the AISO Library at Presidio of Monterey, CA. This position is responsible for the Reference Services to the DLIFLC community. This is a TERM position NTE 5 years.

Duties

Develop content for the library website and to ensure that information is current and relevant. Provide for on-line access to wide variety of resources in order to support current curriculum for multiple language programs. Utilize general and specialized reference resources including public and private on-line computer databases to prepare general and individualized bibliographies and current awareness products. Prepare publicity materials, and various special or recurring reports and studies on all facets of library operations. Initiate instructional programs and activities designed specifically for language learning for faculty and staff. Work with faculty to ensure understanding of, and reference support for specialized language curriculum for basic, intermediate, and advanced programs.

Basic Requirement: Individual Occupational Requirements: The Librarian occupation has specific educational requirements which apply to all positions: Completion of one (1) full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. (NOTE: You MUST submit ALL your transcripts.) -OR- A total of at least five (5) years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification and/or education requirements listed below: Specialized Experience (Standard Verbiage): Please confirm the experience requirements listed are adequate for the position, they will be used to qualify applicants for the position. Specialized Experience for the GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Providing assistance to users of the library in the selection of reading material or in the utilization of various library services; 2) providing instructional services/assistance such as check in and out materials and updating patron records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Specialized Experience for the GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) reviewing and problem-solving of the charging, discharging, overdue items, interlibrary loan, and reserve request systems; 2) develop content for the library website and to ensure that information is current and relevant; 3) Initiates and develops instructional programs and activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). -OR- Education Substitution: Successful completion of a master's degree in library science or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. (NOTE: You MUST submit ALL your transcripts.) -OR- Combination of education and experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. (NOTE: You MUST submit ALL your transcripts.) Specialized Experience for the GS-11: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) professional knowledge of library system policies and procedures in order to accomplish daily assigned library functions; 2) prepares variety of subject guides, reading lists, and other finding aids;3) provide assistance to users of the library in the selection of reading material or in the utilization of various library services; 4) prepares publicity materials, and various reports and studies on all facets of library operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). -OR- Successful completion of 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in library science or doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) related to the position. -OR- Combination of education and experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
