The incumbent serves as a Medical Laboratory Technician at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center in Walla Walla, WA Healthcare System, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services with responsibility for performing difficult specialized tasks including, but not limited to molecular testing, high complexity testing, recording workload statistics, quality management projects and obtaining data for validation studies.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to: Incumbent uses their comprehensive knowledge of professional lab principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work. Properly collects handles, accessions, and labels specimens according to but not limited to safety, patient identification and infection control policies. Utilizes their comprehensive knowledge of laboratory Quality Control and the quality assurance principles of performance improvement to manage reagents, supply inventories and document control. Instructs Medical Center of CBOC personnel on procedures in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Users guide. Uses extensive knowledge of Medical Laboratory Technology profession to read, interpret and apply complex written instructions and procedures. Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained. Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results, Recognize abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly. Assists in the development and maintenance and modification of various computer applications liaison are maintained with technical representatives to correct computer programming and to resolve common problems. Participates in the performance of proficiency surveys unknown specimens and prepares the appropriate work sheets for the Laboratory Manager. Documents corrective action taken on out-of-range proficiency survey results. Follows standards of accreditation agencies such as the JC, FDA, IG, and others. Acts as consultant communicating and interacting with other members of the laboratory, healthcare team, external relations, customers, and patients. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/30/2024. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. You may qualify based on your specialized experience as described below: For GS-7: You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; OR Technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Performs the work requiring regular and recurring exertion such as standing for long periods, bending over instruments, and performing phlebotomy and performance of other physical tasks.
