This individual serves as both Clinical Nutrition Manager and Weight Management Program Coordinator for VA Boston Healthcare System. The Clinical Nutrition Manager is the supervisor for the clinical section of Nutrition and Food Service and directs a comprehensive nutritional care program. This position is located at the Brockton, MA location and is 40 Hrs/ Week.

Duties

The Weight Management Program Coordinator has full responsibility for administering all aspects of the local initiative to support the health and well-being of the Veteran population and the employees who care for them. This involves leading an interdisciplinary team who is responsible for all levels of the facility MOVE! program, both for Veterans and employees. The Weight Management Program Coordinator has the ultimate responsibility for planning the local weight management program based on the national guidance provided in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Weight Management Program Directive. The expectation is that the Weight Management Program Coordinator will address weight issues for veterans and staff at all levels of the MOVE! program throughout the healthcare system. These duties include, but are not limited to the following: Clinical manager must be able to perform all duties of subordinate clinical dietitians and health technicians in Nutrition and Food Services. Functions as a professional and technical advisor to clinical staff, other allied healthcare professionals, program directors and managers throughout the healthcare system, including MOVE! weight management program staff. Develops and implements nutrition therapy programs. Ensures that materials utilized in patient education are based on current literature, practice, and research. Keeps abreast of current scientific, technological, theoretical and treatment modality changes, as well as management theory, relating to the provision of nutrition care. Registration/Certification: All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA). [NOTE: Advanced Level Practice Dietitians must possess a minimum of one advanced practice credential relevant to the area of practice, (e.g. Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC), Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR), Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition (CSG), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), or Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO)).] Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Grandfathering Provision: All persons employed in VHA as a dietitian on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and registration requirements or board certification, if applicable for employees who do not meet all the basic requirements in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following apply: Such employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journeyman level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Dietitians who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. Dietitians initially grandfathered into this occupation who subsequently obtain additional education and/or registration that meet all of the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation. Employees who are retained as a dietitian under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry as a dietitian. GS-12 GRADE REQUIREMENTS FOR CLINICAL NUTRITION MANAGER: Experience. Completion of one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11). Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. A clinical nutrition manager serves as a supervisory dietitian, clinical nutrition expert, and consultant with primary responsibility for professional management support of clinical nutrition program activities. The clinical nutrition manager integrates clinical functions with other sections of NFS, other services and units within the medical center, hospital and community based clinics, and the local community. The individual assesses, plans, and evaluates the clinical nutrition program to ensure proper coordination between the delivery of clinical nutrition services and the overall delivery of health care. The clinical nutrition manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with internal and external regulatory authorities. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Ability to develop, maintain, and supervise a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies to assure compliance with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities. Knowledge of the principles of program management and oversight required to develop program goals and objectives, administer and monitor program, evaluate program outcomes/accomplishments, set and redefine priorities, and implement effective solutions in processes and/or systems as needed. Ability to act as a consultant for staff. *Ability to determine the continuing education needs of staff and appropriate resources to meet those needs. *Knowledge of human resource management principles and the ability to manage/supervise, i.e, plan, organize, delegate, direct, control, review activities of groups of subordinates. Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition care and the treatment of complex cases in clinical settings in order to develop, implement, and coordinate best practices and supervise clinical nutrition staff. There may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items including training paperwork or manuals, or small equipment, such as: laptop computers, mobile LCD projectors; or traveling. Work often involves talking for long periods of time and incumbent may be susceptible to eyestrain from working long hours on the computer.
