The primary purpose of this position is to prepare surfaces and apply coating materials such as paints, varnishes, stains, etc. to park assets and signs. Duties

This position will perform duties associated with the treatment, preparation, and coating of wood, metal, concrete or other surfaces. Duties may include: Prepare various surfaces by scraping, wire brushing, masking, spackling and sanding surfaces; clean, degrease and remove oil or wax buildup; remove scale, rust, dirt and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly. Obtain supplies and equipment, set up ladders and scaffolds, covers items with drop cloths and tape, and perform all necessary preparatory work. Mix, thin, blend, match, tint, and tone coating materials following specific oral and written directives. Apply coating materials such as primers, paints, varnishes, shellacs, using standard application techniques; ensure that coating finish meets surface protection requirements. Use and maintain tools including brushes, rollers, spray guns, graining devices, compressors, etc. Follow established safety practices, rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment; use and assure proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. TERM POSITION; This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action. POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.
