Duties
You will perform emergency protocols and procedures by providing basic life support (BLS) established by the system medical director.
You will drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as, but not limited to: pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) Vehicles.
You will perform firefighting duties for a variety of facilities and perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems.
You will inspect, test, and maintain vehicles and equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations.
You will operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner, while maintaining effective awareness of conditions for possible repositioning of vehicles and/or warning other firefighters of hazards.
Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain current Firefighter certifications, clarified in Qualifications below.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to meet any applicable credentialing or privileging requirements prior to appointment.
- This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
Qualifications
GS-07:
Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department/brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; 5) Driving and operating firefighting vehicles; and 6) Performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures.
Required Certifications: Firefighter I and II, HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, Driver Operator Pumper
The certifications listed below must be obtained within 1 year of start date.
Airport Firefighter, Driver Operator ARFF, Driver Operator Aerial, and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT)
GS-06:
Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department/brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; 5) Driving and operating firefighting vehicles; and 6) Performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures.

**Airport Firefighter and Driver Operator ARFF is not required at the Dam Neck Naval Facility, Virginia Beach, Virginia location.
