About the Position: Works under the direction of the Director of Operations, who provides general instructions, standard procedures, overall priorities and policies, and relies on the incumbent to control work operations and accomplish an adequate quantity and quality of work.
Duties
Serves as Supervisor over the Railroad Operations Division, exercising full supervisory responsibility over work operations involving approximately 10 subordinate workers.
Plans weekly and monthly work schedules and sequence of operations for subordinates.
Determines how many assignments can be done concurrently, which ones must be delayed, and the number and types of employees needed, considering skills, personnel, materials, and equipment available and required.
Assures that material is ordered and delivered to work sites so as not to delay work.
Participates with other offices in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, budget requests, staffing needs, estimates and recommendations as to scheduling projected work
Explains work requirements, methods, and procedures; instructs subordinates in new procedures; and provides advice when problems arise.
Identifies employees training needs, and initiates recommendations to provide necessary training.
Schedules and approves leave of subordinates. Promotes the participation of employees in such programs as the suggestion program cost reduction.
Implements, trains and manages the application of regulations within the Rail Operations Division.

- Incumbent must be able to maintain licensing and certification as an operating locomotive engineer and also maintain verification of this degree of technical competence.
- A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Railroad Operations Supervisor without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Railroad Operations Supervisor duties to include 1) Prioritizing work of subordinates, 2) Assisting subordinates with work requirements, 3) Administering personnel matters such as leave requests and training needs; and 4) Ensuring compliance of rail operation policy and procedures. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must use physical agility and effort in pushing, pulling, lifting, positioning and turning various braking, switching, and coupling devices; moving and lifting arms and devices to give signals; walking over rails and ties and running to perform tasks. Must be able to climb aboard locomotives and train cars, sometimes while they are moving or have slippery steps, rungs, and grab irons. Required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and put forth similar effort in pushing and removing obstacles from the railway.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works under many adverse conditions in both good and bad weather. Frequently exposed to loud noise, fumes and odors. Exposed to possible injuries from accidents. May wear protective clothing, such as safety shoes and gloves. Any unusual environmental working conditions that may arise will be compensated for under an appropriate category of the environmental pay regulation.
