This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Diversion Control Division, Drug and Chemical Evaluations Section (DOE). The incumbent designs, develops, and adapts mathematical methods and techniques and utilizes a number of planning and evaluation activities in ensuring the validity of statistical information upon which agency and Federal policy decisions are made in the development, direction and coordination of the Diversion Control effort.

As a Mathematical Statistician your typical work assignments may include: Reviewing, adapting, and modeling domestic manufacturing and distribution efforts necessary to meet legitimate US medical and scientific needs. Determining the availability of relevant data, performs methodological research, and generating inferences about drug abuse problems based on comprehensive analysis of data. Defining difficult and unique problems, conducting research, collecting data, reducing findings to facts, and interpreting and documenting findings. Ensuring the validity of statistical information upon which agency and Federal policy decisions are made in the development, direction and coordination of the Diversion Control effort. Exploring mathematical, statistical, and information handling, and generating inferences about the drug abuse and chemical diversion problems based on comprehensive analysis of the data. Assessing data and applying mathematical or statistical tools to index/model that reasonably anticipate future legitimate domestic needs of internationally controlled narcotic and psychotropic substances. Preparing complex technical and special reports, papers, presentations, briefing papers, and statistical materials based on the data collected and analyzed. Providing innovative recommendations for advancing models of legitimate medical and scientific drug and chemical consumption, diversion estimates of drugs and chemicals, and for resolving obscure problems related to drug and chemical diversion. Serving as spokesperson in defining the significance of drug abuse and chemical diversion statistics supporting drug and chemical control action.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Basic Qualification - Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) AND Specialized Experience requirements as noted below. Qualification claims will be subject to verification. You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience for this position includes: Basic Qualification -- Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) A. Degree: that includes 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Specialized Experience Required GS-13: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level or pay band in the Federal service that includes performing at least four (4) of the six (6) the following duties: 1) Design, develop, and adapt mathematical methods and techniques to statistical processes; 2) Ensure the validity of statistical data for policy decisions and resource allocation; 3) Prepare complex technical reports, presentations and statistical materials based on data collected and analyzed; conduct research, collect data, reduce findings to facts, and interpret and document findings; 4) Use mathematical and statistical measures/models to resolve problems and make recommendations; 5) Defend/explain conclusions resulting from evaluation of data; or 6) Evaluate the precision and validity of estimates and investigate sources and magnitude of error in data.
