The purpose of the position is to install, repair and adjust defective wiring, fixtures, switches, controls, and equipment; and perform limited installation and repair of complex electrical systems.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Follows schematic drawings that provide the exact work specifications such as the location where the electrical wiring is to be hooked into the installed system.
Removes, replaces, tightens, splices, solders, and insulates defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, and poorly operating thermostats.
Locates broken, worn, damaged, or poorly operating wiring, fixtures, controls, and equipment through visual check.
Replaces worn or bad switches, relays, and outlets.
Completes needed repairs to installed systems and rearranges and hooks up items.
Installs or repairs electrical systems incident to the construction or maintenance or family housing units, buildings, quarters, offices, or shops; or performs limited assignments in the installation or repair of complex industrial electrical systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. To be found at least minimally qualified for the position of Electrical Worker at the WG-08 level, your application and supporting documentation must demonstrate the critical knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for satisfactory job performance. For this position, the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision is prime. Examples of qualifying experience include but are not limited to: installing/operating fixtures, wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, etc.; reading wiring diagrams; removing and replacing fixtures and controls for repairs; rearranging old or installing new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures in existing systems; measure, cut, bend wire and conduit to specified lengths and angles; and using hand/power tools, such as wire cutters, strippers, drills, threaders, etc.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. The incumbent is sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more; and in close quarters such as manholes and attics. Incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors; and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises.
