Duties

The Health Technician provides support in a wide variety of basic clinical and administrative activities in the residential outpatient domiciliary setting.
Major duties:
Answering and directing phone calls.
Maintaining files and records.
Using a computer to perform administrative duties.
Providing training to new personnel on clinical and administrative duties.
Supporting patients to develop trust and relationships.
Using techniques to appropriately de-escalate disruptive patients.
Performing environmental rounds and maintaining awareness of patient activities.
Assisting doctors and nurses in care and treatment of ill patients.
Interviewing patients to document complaint, medical history, and personnel information.
Documenting electronic patient medical records.
Scheduling patient appointments, tests, and procedures.
Performing other duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-5 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in Federal Service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Health Technician position to be filled. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience for this position includes: Performing both clerical and clinical duties in a medical/healthcare environment; answering and directing phone calls and/or visitors; scheduling appointments; (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.)

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education in subjects directly related to the position, and specialized experience which meets the total qualification requirements for this position at the GS-5 grade level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Work Conditions: The work is performed in a clinic setting. This includes a variety of periods of sitting, walking, standing, and carrying of items. The selectee must be able to utilize good body mechanics. The selectee must be physically capable of walking distances required to perform daily rounds, multiple times per shift, respond to emergencies within the facility, complete emergency procedures including but not limited to: evacuations, drills and Basic Life Support. The selectee must be able to maintain auditory and visual alertness during all assigned tours of duty. The work is performed in the residential outpatient domiciliary setting. The environment involves risk, which requires normal safety precautions. The employee works in a health care facility where exposure to contagious disease exists. The physical surroundings involve risks and discomfort that require special precautions, exposure to undiagnosed and infectious disease, contacts with patients under the influence of intoxicants, verbal and physical assault from patients.
