This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institutes of Health( NIH),Office of the Director (OD), in the Office of Intramural Research (OIR).

Duties

As a Museum Curator your duties will include, but are not limited to the following: Exercises primary responsibility for the care and management of ONHM's Stetten Museum collection. Serves as a key member of ONHM's exhibit development team, which jointly develops and presents new exhibits from initial concept through construction to exhibit launch. In developing exhibits, each member of the team conducts historical research. Advises NIH institutes, centers, and offices (ICOs) regarding their efforts to collect and care for historical items that document their own histories. Provides essential contributions to ONHM history projects, some of which may support museum exhibits or education efforts. Serves as ONHM's social media content manager, producing regular posts and tracking standard metrics, updating ONHM's social media strategy as appropriate, and working with other ONHM staff to celebrate NIH anniversaries, observances, and commemorative occasions. Shares responsibility for the development and maintenance of a balanced collection with the senior curator

Qualifications

Basic Requirement In order to qualify for a Museum Curator, GS-1015, position you must have a Bachelors degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field (e.g. history, anthropology, archeology, art, or natural sciences). This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. You qualify at the GS-09 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: You qualify for this position at the GS-09 level if you have completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.B. or J.D. Education must be related to the position to be qualifying OR You qualify for this position at the GS-09 level if you have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing collections management for a museum focused on the history of medical and scientific research; assisting in assessments of donated objects and conservation measures for objects prior to exhibit or storage; assisting with development of museum exhibits in collaboration with senior curator, other subject-matter experts, and exhibit sponsors; preparing documents for museum loans; managing shipping and receiving of museum objects for loans and exhibits; and contributing to collaborative generation of ideas, selection of images, and drafting of text for social media posts. OR You qualify for this position at the GS-09 level if you have a combination of post baccalaureate education related to the position and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. You qualify at the GS-11 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: You qualify for this position at the GS-11 level if you have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or an LL.M. Education must be related to the position to be qualifying OR You qualify for this position at the GS-11 level if you have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing collections management for a museum focused on the history of medical and scientific research, and maintaining regular preventive conservation measures; collaboratively developing museum exhibits, museum collection policies, and organizational records; preparing museum reports and documentation including actions such as loans, shipping, and receiving; conducting historical research; answering inquiries from researchers and the media; and participating in the collaborative generation of ideas, selection of images, and drafting of text for social media. OR You qualify for this position at the GS-11 level if you have a combination of post baccalaureate education related to the position and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements: You qualify for this position at the GS-12 level if you have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Managing a museum collection focused on the history of medical and scientific research; conducting quality assurance checks and implementing preventive conservation measures; contributing to the development of museum exhibits, both online and physical, by selecting objects and drafting or editing exhibit text; drafting and implementing museum collection policies; conducting historical research and answering inquiries from researchers and the media; and leading collaborative generation of ideas, selection of images, and finalizing text for social media. A combination of education and specialized experience that meets the qualification requirements for this position.
