Duties
Performs a variety of tasks involved in packing and repacking non-hazardous and/or hazardous materials and items. Selects proper container and methods of packing, cushioning and follows specialized packing procedures.
Examines any prepackaged items to determine whether any repacking or over-packing is required, consolidates shipments; and applies certification, identification and shipping data.
Applies a wide variety of packing methods and techniques including blocking and bracing based on the search and application of regulations covering the packing and transporting of hazardous materials.
May pack, preserve, or re-pack material or items where techniques and procedures are standard and/or require little deviation from established methods.
May perform receiving, storing, shipment, and distribution of a variety of bin supplies, materials, equipment, and commodities using material handling equipment to include fork lift, stock selectors, etc.

Qualifications
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Effort: Performs work on concrete or asphalt surfaces and is required to stand, stoop, bend and work in tiring positions. Expends considerable physical effort due to the nature of the items being packed. Lifts, moves, maneuvers, and positions items weighing up to 40 pounds, requests assistance for carrying or lifting items that weigh more than 40 pounds. Physical effort is required when using tools of the trade.
Working Conditions: Work is frequently performed in warehouses that are poorly lit, heated, and ventilated. Occasionally work is performed outside in areas where employee is subjected to various weather conditions such as heat and extreme cold. They are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Safety and Health Requirements: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, and foot protection and protective clothing such as gloves, apron, and coveralls. Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. If employee works near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment, the employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary. In situations involving hazardous materials, employee may be required to wear protective clothing, respirators, and other specialized protective devices, in addition to their basic protective equipment.
