This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Serves as a machinist assigned to the Marietta Repair Station located in Marietta, OH. The position is part of a traveling fleet/repair party unit that is under the command of the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet in the Huntington District.

Duties

Help maintain all machine ship equipment and tools in a clean, safe, and functional working order. Use quantitative analysis to determine solutions to technical problems. Plan and layout work from blueprints, worksheets, and drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Use a variety of precision measuring instruments and equipment. Grind and sharpen tools, jigs, and fixtures required to achieve specific dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid State motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment.
  • Annual Physical is required.
  • Incumbent must be able to maintain all Corps of Engineers licenses associated with this position.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program due to the capacity of the overhead crane operated. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Machinist without more than normal supervision. Manufacturing parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kind of metals and metal alloys and other materials, and performs machining work required in the manufacture of castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications. Carries-out assignments which require special adaption and extension of the use of conventional machine tools and the use of specialized and non-conventional machine tools such as jig borers, jib grinders, hobbing, machines, hob grinders, gear generators, and numerically controlled machine tools. Plans and lays out work, sets up and operates machine tools, and performs bench and assembly work - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent standing, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifts and carries larger assemblies or complete units exceeding 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body in installing, repairing, operating, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, machinery recesses, lock walls, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders, scaffolding, and works from suspended stages. WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wear safety glasses, safety shoes and other safety apparel and equipment as required. Works inside and outside during the day or night, subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water which is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment on scaffolds and from slings. Often the work will be behind bulkheads below the water level. Subject to falls, drowning, injury or discomfort and when inside, exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noises. Use safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing.
