The Staff Dentist position is assigned to the General Practice Section, which is responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of oral/dental disease. This includes treatment planning, restorative dentistry and dental procedures generally considered within the purview of the general practitioner commensurate with their level of training. The responsibilities of the Staff Dentist position include overall administrative and clinical responsibility for all aspects of the Dental clinic.
Duties
he Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), a flagship Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care provider, is one of the largest and busiest VA medical centers in the country. Its two hospitals, located in Little Rock and North Little Rock, anchor a broad spectrum of inpatient and outpatient health care services, ranging from disease prevention through primary care, to complex surgical procedures, to extended rehabilitative care. This System serves as a teaching facility for more than 1,500 students and residents enrolled in approximately 65 educational affiliates; its principal affiliate is the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The System is reaching out to Veterans through its Community-Based Outpatient Clinics in Conway, El Dorado, Hot Springs, Mena, Mountain Home, Pine Bluff, Russellville and Searcy; its Home-Based Primary Care Center in Hot Springs; and the Veterans Day Treatment Center for homeless veterans in downtown Little Rock. The Staff Dentist will be assigned to the North Little Rock, Arkansas facility and will provide all phases of Dentistry including but not limited to restorative Dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics, periodontics (open flap and grafting procedures), endodontics (nickel-titanium rotary instruments), Cerec Restorations, oral surgery, and limited orthodontics including Invisalign. The Staff Dentist will work with the Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants and Dental Lab Technicians, and Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residents (AEGD) assigned to the Dental Service.
Other duties and responsibilities, include but are not limited to:
Coordinate assignment of responsibilities expected to maintain efficient clinic operations,
Perform placement and restoration of Osseointegration Implants using over denture attachments, CAD/CAM patient specific abutments, CAD/CAM bar, hybrids,
Make implant radiographic and surgical guides and read cone beam x-rays,
Assess, diagnose, and provide treatment and post-treatment care in all the above areas,
Provide oversight for community care consults of patients assigned,
Demonstrate proper infection control procedures and complete annual mandatory Infection Control Training,
Modify care as necessitated by patient's age and abilities,
Provide accurate and understandable instructions to patients and will monitor patient condition during treatment, and being alert for signs of physical distress. Staff Dentist will participate in patient identification and time out per Joint Commission requirements to include annual mandatory patient courses, and
Comply with mandatory safety training per Medical Center continuing education policy
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Qualifications
Dentist Basic Requirements
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:
Experience practicing proficiently in all aspects of general dentistry to include the ability to perform selected specialty services in Inpatient and Outpatient settings.

Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires:
