General Information In order to be eligible to receive consideration for this position, you must be able to: (1) report to the duty station location listed in this vacancy announcement, if selected; Not remote work; and (2) be available to work the schedule identified. This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year that may be extended as long as the individual continues to meet the eligibility requirements of the Pathways Intern Program and the employing office has a continuing need.

Duties

The USGS Forest & Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center is seeking an associate, undergraduate, or graduate level student working towards a degree in Management, Administration, Business, HR, Accounting, or Finance to gain practical experience in Budget, Travel, HR, Financial Management, Fleet Management, and Administration. As a Student Trainee Admin, you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of Business Management. Duties include: Prepare routine travel reservations, authorizations, and vouchers using an automated travel system. Maintain office records according to established filing and records management procedures. Maintain inventory of office supplies and equipment. Prepare property purchase and transfer forms. Review procurement documents to ensure that newly acquired property items are properly classified, numbered, coded, and entered into appropriate property tracking systems. Develop a variety of administrative reports related to budget, payroll, travel, or procurement. Enters or extracts information in financial, personnel, payroll, travel, and training systems, as well as local administrative databases/websites. Receive visitors, answer and direct phone calls, and prepare office correspondence. Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office environment.

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. Eligibility Requirements In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program: You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); AND Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; AND Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis; AND You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program. Qualification Requirements This internship is geared toward students majoring in one of the following areas of study: business administration, finance, information technology, management, accounting, etc. For GS-05: Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Example of GS-4 level work: Performs a full range of assignments consisting of related steps, processes or methods; responses differ in nature and sequence; requires knowledge of an organization's programs and operations, rules and processes. Exercises initiative in completing recurring assignments; uses judgment in selecting appropriate guidelines and procedures from among a number of specific references. **OR A full four years of progressive, successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is a prerequisite may be used to meet the qualification requirements for GS-5. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. **OR Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet the qualification requirements for GS-5. Only progressive education in excess of the first 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours (i.e., beyond the first two years) of a course of study is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.
