The Hudson Valley VA is looking for a Supervisory Firefighter in the Fire Service. This position responsible for the operational supervision of an assigned Firefighting shift at either the Montrose or the Castle Point campus of the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System.
Duties
Major Duties
Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. Incumbent is responsible for performing a wide range of duties and responsibilities in response to the Fire Prevention and Life Safety Management Program. As the shift supervisor, incumbent provides overall supervision, command and leadership of all fire prevention and suppression activities during the shift. Plans daily activities and schedules employees for various duties in relation to the mission and responsibilities of the fire department. Adjusts day-to-day work in accordance with established priorities. Provides technical advice, guidance, and instructions to subordinates. Assures that all fire department services are provided and in a ready state, during the shift. Maintains a thorough familiarity with the layout and contents of buildings, locations of fire protection systems, and other similar characteristics of the installation. The incumbent will be responsible for the operation of a duty shift within the Fire Section through the direct supervision of 4 to 7 FTEE, including any of the following: Firefighter (Paramedic), GS-0081-9 and Firefighter (Basic Life Support), GS-0081-7.
Other Assigned Duties
During those times in which the Deputy Fire Chief is not present, the incumbent may act in the capacity of the Deputy Fire Chief, responsible for the overall management and supervision of the fire prevention and life safety programs and fire and emergency services for either the Montrose or Castle Point Campus, comprised of Long-Term Care, Mental Health, Ambulatory Healthcare and outpatient facilities. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.
Work Schedule: 48 hour shifts, 72 hour work week

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/17/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-09 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: leading or managing a team of (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

At the time of appointment, incumbent is required to possess and maintain the following certifications:
- National Fire Officer II
- National Fire Inspector II
- National Fire Instructor I
- National or New York Hazardous Materials Operations Level
- National or New York State Hazardous Materials Incident Commander
- National or New York State Confined Space Rescue Technician
- National Registry or New York State Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
- National Incident Management System (NIMS), ICS-300 level
- Valid State Driver's License
***Incumbent must participate in drug testing and physical conditioning programs.
***Incumbent must pass an annual medical surveillance and a job requirement physical agility test.
**An unrestricted driver's license is required for this position**
Physical Requirements: Working conditions will include heavy physical exertion, extreme heat, smoke and dust in enclosed smoke filled places, in all types of weather.
