You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) of NMRTC ANNAPOLIS MD. THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1109 of the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2020 Public Law 116-92 amended Section 9905 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.) to streamline and simplify certain DoD civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain positions in the competitive service in Department of Defense.

Duties

You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations. You will present oral briefs and provide detailed written reports of IH survey findings. You will evaluate the need for quantitative assessment of air contamination, noise, physical stressors and of ventilation systems. You will recommend engineering controls to correct deficiencies. You will document shops, processes, Similar Exposure Groups (SEG), and samples in the DoD designated DOEHRS-IH database.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to be immunized on an annual basis against influenza.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience drafting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals. Experience providing health hazard assessments using scientific sampling and statistical procedures, analytical testing, and equipment to identify hazardous materials and exposures. Experience providing technical authority on various Industrial Hygiene issues to detect, prevent, and control exposures to reduce or eliminate occupational illness and injuries. Experience conducting and documenting Similar Exposure Groups (SEG) exposure assessments in the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS-IH). dditional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management web site: Industrial Hygiene Series 0690 (opm.gov) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

Basic Education Requirements

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
