This position is located within the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) with 1 vacancy located in San Diego, California.
Duties
As a Biological Science Technician, you will perform the following duties:
- Responsible for all aspects of laboratory management for a high throughput molecular laboratory by maintaining specialized lab equipment, coordinating the use of shared laboratory spaces, and providing training and oversight for a variety of complex molecular laboratory techniques and equipment.
- Conducts research including, but not limited to, performing DNA extractions, sequencing and other standard molecular standard molecular techniques; participates in field research and stranding response as needed.
- Participates in complex project planning and budgeting with program and project leads. Liaises with operations and management staff to ensure laboratory project, supply and equipment needs are met.
- Monitors and tracks the laboratory budget, acts as a purchase card holder to purchase supplies and equipment, and maintains working knowledge of purchasing and procurement policies and procedures.

EDUCATION: There is no positive education requirement for this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify at the ZT-4 (GS-11/12) grade level:
Applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZT-3 (GS-10) in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Conducting laboratory maintenance and upkeep including inventory, maintaining lab equipment, restocking supplies and making reagents;
Assisting with molecular laboratory research using established protocols for DNA extraction and sequencing; and
Assisting in project planning and budgeting for a research laboratory.
